You know how the saying goes: “the best business is done on the golf course.” So golf just isn’t my thing. But until recently, you could find me every Thursday night at the Coffey Rd fields which is where I’ve built some of the best friendships, personal relationships (eh hem, I married one of them) and business clientele. The Columbus Co-ed Softball Association has been my most profitable hobby yet! I’ve booked friends on their Jamaica honeymoon, sent a group of guys to Vegas for a bachelor party, and saved a few of them hundreds of dollars on their car insurance. Most importantly, many of them helped shape our newest version of the AAA website when I called on them for feedback.
Central Ohio has a ton of great intramural sports organizations. It’s a great way to meet new friends or bond more closely with those you already know. And even better, you’ll quickly start to learn about what your teammates do for a living and hopefully, land a sales lead.
For the most rewarding opportunities, choose a team sport you’re interested in. The more people that participate on the team, the more opportunities you have to meet those with something else in common with you. Perhaps one that is sponsored by a restaurant or local pub – you’ll usually end up at those establishments after your games. There are leagues for all levels: novice, intermediate, advance, competitive and even semi-pro when it comes to baseball so there is something for everyone.
Recently, kickball has taken hold of Central Ohio. I’m itching to play as are about 25 of my female friends. Visit Gokickball.com to see what all of the excitement is about. Other organizations such as Capital City Sports or Sports Monster also offer wide range of sports leagues. Even check out your favorite watering hole such as Flannigan’s on Sawmill Rd which offers sand volleyball Spring through Fall.
Do you belong to a YMCA, Community Center, or have a Parks and Rec facility near you? Here are a few:
Worthington
Westerville
Reynoldsburg
Hilliard
Grove City
Delaware
Dublin
Gahanna
For those interested individual sports such as skiing or canoeing, trying hooking up with the Columbus Ski Club or Columbus Outdoor Pursuit.
You are never too old to participate. The age range of the teams I participate on are 18-60. Worthington even has a senior softball league where you can play well into your 70s!
What sports organizations are you involved in? How have the connections helped your business? We’d like to hear from you!

Does the old Ohio PA Paintball League (OPPL)? I was Co-Captain of a 3 man team that was missing a player!
Great post though on being active and networking… Looking forward to a bowling night now!
Hi Rocky! Thanks for the comment. Looks like there is a league still. Check out this link: http://www.theohiopaintballleague.com/Home_Page.php
In fact, there was recently a tournament in my parents’ hometown, Bellevue, Ohio. This Paintball Times article was just released today! http://www.paintballtimes.com/glp/index.htm
Also wanted to offer that the CYP CLUB (Columbus Young Professionals Club) has a vast amount of athletic programming and sports tournaments that offer socializing and recreational opportunities for Central Ohioans ages 21-45. There are about a dozen different sports that we offer, including (newly added) golf clinics and tennis outings. More info can be found at http://www.cypclub.com/athletics.
