I'm an attorney who works as a contract negotiator for a software company. I also happen to be a social media and startup junkie. Follow me on Twitter, I am @wyliemac. Also, follow a bunch of us Columbus Twitterers on the Tracking for Columbus page.
Planning Startup Weekend Columbus has given me a greater appreciation for event planners and what they do. But, we did something that I haven’t seen many events do, and that was to create a private wiki for registered attendees to contribute ideas, comments and suggestions.
A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
The beauty of the wiki was that it allowed to “form” a community before the actual event. It allowed us to notify and interact with the participants. And it allowed the participants to engage with us and the other participants. And after the event, it provided a forum for participants to discuss what went right and what went wrong.
What’s exciting, is that one of the groups that formed from Startup Weekend Columbus saw the value of the event community and formed EventStart. EventStart “will provide organizers with the tools they need to quickly and successfully launch their next big event. Within minutes an organizer can generate a complete event website, including user registration capabilities, blog, and wiki.” I can’t wait for EventStart to be released. Having planned Startup Weekend Columbus, I know the value of the community. Use the available tools to engage the community to make your event the best it can be.

Alvin – I would like to see the wiki for Startup Weekend to get a sense of how the participants used it(I want to see if it will work for an event I am planning). Is it possible for me to have access to the wiki?
SWC would be a good case study for event planning. I am also looking forward to using event start in the future.
What a cool idea – I’ll definitely check out EventStart. Should we use that to plan our next Columbus Tweetup, I wonder?
